Great Lakes Ambassadors News: "MSO Announcements"
I thought you might be interested in reading the Announcements that we have sent out to the 82 players that compose the 109 teams we have for the Michigan Senior Olympics (MSO), February 2nd - 4th.
The Announcements are posted on the Michigan Pickleball website to give all of our players an insight into the workings of the MSO. http://mipickleball.usapa.org/2009/01/mso-wt09-pickleball-announcements-by.html
Clicking on the "MSO Winter 2009 Pickleball Announcements" link on the above page will give you the Announcements.
We are communicating several notions to the players:
- The benefits of USAPA sanctioning
- The special benefits of playing in a Great Lakes Showcase Event
- The format of the matches and the rationale for the tight schedule
- The role of the USAPA trained referees
- The benefits of using the USAPA Tournament Software that allows us to plan and post results online
- The rationale for USAPA Membership including the discount on registrations for upcoming Showcase Events

Live Long Live Well Episode 4 "Pickleball" Hosted by Mark Maxwell
Mark Maxwell (Max) is a consultant dedicated to the health and wellness of baby boomers and seniors. He is also the producer of a public access TV program, Live Long Live Well, which is broadcast weekly in various cities throughout Michigan.
Max discovered Pickleball at the Troy Recreation Center and now understands that Pickleball qualifies as an outstanding lifetime sport that can actually help us all live long and live well. In fact, Max has produced a 30-minute episode of his program to introduce Pickleball to the community. The program will be broadcast on the Community Media Network (CMNTV) Michigan and is available to other public access stations throughout the country.
The entire 30 minute DVD can be viewed online at Google video
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=Pickleball_lllw&emb=0&aq=f
as well as on Max's website Live Long Live Well
http://www.livelonglivewell.org/gpage1.html
where it has the following description:
"Pickleball is a great game that is fun for all ages and is rapidly gaining popularity across the United States. Host Mark Maxwell learns about the game from special guest Dick Manasseri, a Michigan Senior Olympics Pickleball champion."
The program discusses the history of Pickleball, demonstrates the various shots, and explains how the game is played. It can serve as a demo/clinic for beginners. Instructors, recreation center program managers and physical education teachers can use it as part of their Pickleball programs.
Public access stations throughout the country are always looking for quality content that would be of interest to the communities they serve. Local Ambassadors and other Pickleball promoters are free to contact their local public access TV stations to request that they broadcast the program. This might be done to generate general interest in a community or as part of a targeted campaign to kick-off a new Pickleball program at a local recreation center.
Please contact me with any questions or comments about the program or to discuss plans to use the DVD in any of the above or other settings.
Let's make 2009 the year that Pickleball becomes widely-known as a Great Lifetime Sport!!

Chicago Discovers Pickleball
Thousands of families in Chicago now know what Pickleball is because one man, his family and a few dedicated volunteers brought Pickleball to Chicago’s largest venue as part of the Mayor Daley’s Holiday Sports Fest which attracted over 80,000 people.USA Pickleball Association Ambassador Joe Balagot found a way to get Pickleball included in the Sports Fest, invited Doug Smith from Pickleball, Inc to provide equipment and contacted a small but effective group of volunteers to keep things going for 3 days over the holidays.
Joe reported, “Pickleball went over BIG with everyone who came by and got to try it for a few minutes. I had three families that came back all three days just to play for a few minutes. I’ve received requests for demonstrations beginning next month.”
“I had people from 3yrs. old to 60+ who had a blast playing even if it was only for a few minutes. I had lines for hours straight and letting folks play doubles in 5 minute increments non-stop. It was actually fun to watch all these kids trying to keep the ball in play and putting in 100% effort”.
The Sport Fest organizers have invited Joe to come back next year with even more courts in action to handle the enthusiastic crowds.
This year, Joe delivered a Herculean performance by manning the Pickleball courts for three days with helpful collaboration from his wife, Barbara, his daughter Tricia Morandi, and his granddaughters Emma and Ruby. Fred Fry, Ambassador from Madison, Wisconsin, and his wife Kaia Fry pitched in plus Craig and Diana Glasson from Arizona, Craig’s son Steve from Glen Ellyn IL, Steve Glasson’s daughters Jessica and Samantha. Pat Nolan from Berwyn IL and his Friend Tom Lieving from Glen Ellyn IL rounded out the dedicated band of volunteers.
It’s not too early to mark your calendars for Mayor Daley’s Holiday Sports Fest 2009 planned for late December. Think about joining Joe and his holiday Pickleball players in Chicago!

Pickleball Pioneers
The afterglow of Michigan's 2nd USAPA sanctioned tournament, is a good time to express the appreciation the Great Lakes Pickleball players feel toward the community of players in the Regions across the USA and Canada.
The Great Lakes Region thanks our Pickleball Pioneers! This quote was included in the 2009 Great Lakes Region Regionalization Plan: "The Region consists of nine Midwestern states around the Great Lakes and the province of Ontario. We have 37 Ambassadors, many of whom experienced Pickleball during winter stays in Arizona or Florida. We are all indebted to these pioneers who have brought Pickleball to the Great Lakes Region and promoted its growth locally"
The EXCELLENCE continues...
