Not Bad For the Heart of the Snowbelt!

Woodbury MN recently opened a new six-court DEDICATED pickleball complex. This is the largest dedicated pickleball facility in the state and surrounding state area. Woodbury MN Parks and Recreation Dept. announced the opening of the new 6-court pickleball site located in Shawnee Park in August.

Woodbury previously had a single court in Marsh Creek Park in 2009, which it replaced in 2010 with two courts at the Pioneer Park tennis center. Due the growing popularity of the game among active seniors, the courts at Pioneer Park were unable to keep up with demand. The Woodbury Pickleball Club has approximately 80 active members and has scheduled play 7days a week: Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday at 4:00 pm. All other times the courts are open for drop-in play. Woodbury Parks and Recreation provides lessons twice a year, in the spring and fall at a nominal fee.

This new site joins two other newly dedicated pickleball sites in the twin cities area. Bloomington and Eden Prairie each have new four-court pickleball sites. In addition, there are dozens of sites shared with tennis facilities as well as shared indoor venues in recreation centers.

These fantastic results reflect great cooperative effort between the local pickleball players and the Parks & Rec Dept. Three dedicated multi-court sites plus numerous shared venues - not bad for the heart of the snowbelt!

We had our first Woodbury Pickleball Club tourney on the 15th of September and every court was filled.

This has really been fun!

I am pleased to welcome Dr. Christopher "Doc" Rampacek to the USAPA board as Director of the Ambassador program. We are thrilled to have someone with Doc's extensive educational and sports background. Doc has a Doctor of Education degree and teaches undergraduate courses in health, wellness and physical activity. He has been an ambassador in the Houston area for over two years.

Earl Hill will continue in his present role of recruiting new ambassadors and assisting the director. As one of the founding board members of the "new" USAPA organization in 2005, Earl had the vision to develop the ambassador program. We are indebted to Earl for developing the program which has proven to be a driving force for the impressive growth of pickleball that we have seen throughout North America.

Dick Manasseri, like so many others, started playing pickleball and quickly became addicted. After developing his own skills under the tutelage of Pat Sullivan, he wanted to help spread the pleasure to those around him, so turned his talents to teaching others how to play.

In a short time, Dick became the USAPA Ambassador for the Greater Rochester area and spread his enthusiasm to all of southeast Michigan. Soon his influence extended into other parts of Michigan and he became the Regional Ambassador for the Great Lakes. During his time in this position, the region grew to become the second largest in the country.

In the spring of 2009, having left a highly visible trail of accomplishments in growing the sport throughout the Great Lakes Region, Dick was asked to take on the position of USAPA Director of National and International Relations. Always willing to contribute, Dick accepted. He threw himself into this new challenge.

Drawing on his creativity and regular communication with Ambassadors around the country, Dick came up with several new ideas. He initiated the concept of Ambassadors creating mini-plans to help them identify and focus their efforts in growing the sport. By sharing the plans with all the other Ambassadors, good ideas could be implemented in many different regions.

Ambassadors were encountering similar problems and having to reinvent the wheel each time to solve that problem. To address that information issue Dick led the effort to create the "USAPA How to" on-line discussion group for ambassadors across the country to share ideas, ask questions and solve problems with the help of others.

One of the ideas that had worked for Dick that he shared was going to state, regional or national conventions of PE teachers or Recreation Directors to get them to see the benefits of pickleball for their programs. Another successful strategy is offering free beginner lessons to get people hooked.

That on-line discussion forum has evolved into the "Pickleball Promoters How-to Guide" found at http://howtoguide.usapa.org/ . This guide is now available to all, Ambassadors or not, after being honed by Dick and the discussion group. Hopefully many will take these best practices and spread the sport even further.

On the international front, he corresponded frequently with the primary pickleball promoter in India, always providing support and sharing ideas.

Many of Dick's ideas have spread and been improved upon across the country. Dick has stepped down from his USAPA position as Director of National and International Relations, but his vision lives on as others do the same kinds of things he is so good at --- taking the nets, balls, and paddles to a group of people and getting them charged up to play.

So you want to play pickleball? Then you'd suppose you have to go to Florida, or Arizona or maybe Washington where this whole cult thing started. Not so!!! Minnesota is filled with "Snow Birds": people who go to Florida and Arizona in the winter, play pickleball there and then come home to Minnesota.

Jim Klaseus from Bloomington spends a couple of months a year at Road Haven RV Resort in Mesa, AZ. He plays pickleball. He comes home and misses it. He contacts the city and asks, very respectfully, if some lines can be painted on old tennis courts so he and a few others can play this silly pickleball game in the summer. They look at him like he might be some kind of deranged Norwegian. Jim persists, and they finally give him 2 old beater tennis courts. Today they have more people than they can handle on 2 courts and the city has agreed to build 4 new ones.

Jerry Maas from Eden Prairie spends his winters in Florida. Two years ago he thought it would be nice to play pickleball in the summer, so he went to his city. A bunch of them now play 3 times a week both on indoor and outdoor courts.

Mike Jennings got it going in Lakeville through the Senior Center and the folks love it.

Dave Leach is an avid pickleballer who winters at Venture Out in Mesa, AZ. He heads up an all-city tournament there every year and still does not get enough of it. He lives in a small town in northern Minnesota called Onamia. He started it there a couple of years ago in a small recreation center and this year held his first "Onamia Days Tournament", which Jeanne and I played in, and it was a smashing (no pun intended) success.

Jeanne and I used to live in the small town of Northfield, MN and became USAPA pickleball ambassadors for that community. We tried to get it going through the Northfield Senior Center and we were mildly successful to begin with by taping lines on the school tennis courts (the only courts in town). We approached the school district with the idea of painting lines on a couple of them and got a swift and speedy 'no', because the tennis coaches would not allow it. We have since sold our home there and are now full time RV people, so we have become roving ambassadors. This has allowed us to play all over the state for the past couple of years and we love it. We spent last summer in the St. Cloud area and found out that some folks were playing at the Whitney Senior Center. What a group. Tracey Thompson and Kim Kuester head up the program and they now have 5 indoor courts and 2 outdoor courts. They play 3 times a week and on any given evening have 12 to 20 people show up. Tracey started the St. Cloud Pickleball web site http://stcloudpb.weebly.com/ and the club is really taking off.

Randy Hall has a very active group in Willmar, MN. Last year he introduced it to the Minnesota Senior Games for the first time and it was a winner. They had 35 people sign up. This year they expect to double that number. The games are played in Alexandria in July.

We have heard that pickleball is alive and well in Virginia (iron range country to the north), in Rochester, in Ramsey and yes even the little town of Avon where a fellow by the name of Mike Collins is building a club of avid pickleballers with 3 indoor courts and he's now in the process of building 3 outdoor courts.

I' m sure there are more that Jeanne and I don't know about yet, but we will. People in other parts of the state that play pickleball will read this article and we will hear about it. That's great. It's a fun sport. People of all ages love it and Minnesota loves it.

Tom and Jeanne are fulltime RVers who winter at Palm Creek RV Resort in Casa Grande, AZ and spend their summers in Minnesota where their family is.

Pickleball courts dedicated at Lions Park

Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Director Al Moll was joined by Community Center staff, senior athletes and Sechler's Pickles to dedicate the City's first permanent Pickleball Courts in Lions Park June 22, 2010. Four Pickleball courts were constructed by revamping one of the already existing tennis courts. A tennis court and a half tennis court with a backboard still remain, for those who wish to play tennis.

"Bringing Pickleball to Fort Wayne was a grass roots effort at the Community Center," said Director Moll. "We listened to their request and marked off temporary courts at Lakeside Park last summer, then provided an indoor pavilion at Franke Park to play in during the winter. We're hoping that by installing an outdoor court, this sport will catch on at all age levels."

To encourage play, Director Moll announced that the Department will offer free Pickleball lessons for adults and children at Lions Park. Paddles and balls will be supplied.

"These new courts are great," said Pickleball player Tom Fryback. Fryback will be one of the instructors giving free Pickleball lessons. "If you want the time of your life, you should give this game a try. One of the benefits is that you have more time to strategize than you do in tennis."

Pickleball is often compared to badminton, ping pong and tennis, with its own set of rules. Here are some features of Pickleball:

Played indoors or outdoors
Badminton-sized court, with net lowered to 34 inches
Played with perforated plastic ball (like whiffle ball)
Wood or composite paddle twice the size of a ping pong paddle
Easy to learn, but can become fast-paced, competitive game

"Some tennis players are reluctant to try Pickleball because they don't think they'll get a good enough workout," said Fryback. "But you do. Pickleball is less fatiguing than tennis, but it's also exhilarating and satisfying. It's easier on people with arthritis and hip pain."

Sechler's Pickles gave away free samples of their pickles at the dedication and are awarding pickle packs to the Senior Games' Pickleball champs.

The Pickleball courts at Lions Park are open to the public.

Wisconsin Pickleball gets a blog site

Hello all, my name is Dave Lukoski and I am the USAPA Pickleball Ambassador for Fond du Lac and Green Lake County located in East Central Wisconsin.

Our pickleball group has been playing regularly for two years and we love the sport. We currently have 22 members of our group and we have a total of 8 USAPA members within our group.

USAPA tells me that currently there are 25 USAPA members in America's Dairy land. To have 8 members in Ripon, just under a third of all in the state, tells me that right now at least, Ripon is the Pickleball Capital of Wisconsin.

I am attempting to somehow unite Wisconsin Pickleball through this blog. It is my goal to somehow, some way make Wisconsin Pickleball as big as it is in our neighboring state of Michigan.

If anyone would like to contribute articles, tournament announcements or anything of interest to Pickleball players, please contact me at dlukoski@charter.net and I will update this blog.

Fast Growing Sport Celebrates Worldwide with Week of Activities

The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) is pleased to support International Pickleball Week, June 1-7, 2010. A court game of angles and strategies, of position and speed, pickleball is enjoying huge increases in popularity with seniors, school kids and families. During the week starting June 1st the USAPA will be holding events throughout the United States to celebrate the sport and introduce it to new players.

Pickleball is a fun court sport played on a badminton-sized court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic ball similar to a whiffle ball and wood or composite paddles about twice the size of ping-pong paddles. It can be played indoors or outdoors, is easy for beginners to learn – but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. In addition to being fun, the game has developed a reputation for its friendly and social nature.

Pickleball is played by all ages. It is a popular sport in schools and senior centers. The smaller court size and inter-generational appeal makes it perfect for backyard courts. It has great health and fitness benefits for all. It is also becoming popular with persons with disabilities.

To celebrate pickleball at the local level, the USAPA, through over 300 regional and local Ambassadors, will be:

Holding introduction clinics
Staging tournaments
Holding celebrity pickleball matches

"We are extremely excited about the first International Pickleball Week," said Bill Booth, President of the USA Pickleball Association. "The sport of pickleball is really catching on across the world and is particularly popular with seniors. We intend to celebrate the growth of the sport with our fellow players throughout the world, including locations in Canada, Mexico and India."

The USAPA was created in 2005 to promote the sport. It maintains the official rules, sanctions tournaments, provides player rankings and produces the annual National Pickleball Tournament. It is run by a volunteer board of directors and supported by thousands of dues paying members.

The USAPA provides assistance through programs such as:

Ambassadors – over 300 regional and local ambassadors promote the sport at a local level, providing information and training.
Training Grants - The 2010 USAPA Grant program will provide funds to subsidize training programs for school students, local residents, organizations or individuals who are novices to Pickleball and do not belong to a Pickleball club or other organized group.
Pickleball 4 All – This program pairs USAPA volunteers with PE teachers, juniors and adults to mainstream pickleball as a lifetime sport.
Industry Education – The USAPA provides speakers to introduce and demonstrate the sport to industry associations and other interested groups on a local, regional and national basis.

MANITOWOC — The Manitowoc Parks and Recreation Department will be offering a pickleball clinic on Saturday, April 17 from 1-3 p.m. at the Citizen Park Gym at 930 N. 18th St. The clinic is open to individuals of all ages and is free to all participants.

Places to Play Wisconsin Pickleball

On Saturday February 20th, thirteen adventurous Pickleball players from Manitowoc accepted a challenge and traveled 72 miles north, northeast to Fish Creek to face an unknown competitor. We thought we were going to enter into “pickup” games with some new Pickleball friends.

Well, upon our arrival, we were greeted by a tournament director who proceeded to welcome us to the Fish Creek YMCA and begin explanation of the tournament we where about to take part in! We scrambled to get our bearings, hurriedly named our partners, received directions to the locker rooms, and readied ourselves for our very first tournament action.

What a time we had…..Pickleball is more than a game. We were greeted and entertained by some of the nicest people you will ever meet. I have been playing this game for at least six years and have met new friends in Florida, Michigan, Arizona, and of course Wisconsin and our friendships are all linked to this fastest growing sport in America…..Pickleball.

The double elimination tournament was very well organized and was complete with a “Pickleball” travelling trophy. Unfortunately, the Manty Pythons were unable to claim this prized possession this time around. Our championship doubles team, a whopping total age of 42 years, had to face an experienced team representing the Fish Creek YMCA, with a total age consisting of 139 years young .

The Pythons gave the “Creekers” all they could handle but the old guys (I can say this because I’m one of them) prevailed. For me, this was kind of bittersweet, my team lost but then, chalk one up for the old guys…..goes to show Pickleball is for all ages!

Manitowoc will host the 2nd annual tournament and welcome our Pickleball friends from Fish Creek on a date yet to be determined. Training has commenced as the Manty Pythons prepare to take the trophy to where it really belongs…..the Manitowoc Two Rivers YMCA.
